SHA Virtual Programming

Classic Texts in Southern History

In this new SHA virtual program, we will bring members together to consider classic texts in Southern History. A panel of experts will discuss the content, context, and meaning of the text, both in the time of its publication and in our own time, and then open to the audience to further explore this canonical work together.

In our first session in Spring 2024, we will explore the SHA icon and classic text: C. Vann Woodward and his Origins of the New South, 1877-1913. We have three exceptional scholars on the panel: Vernon Burton, Sarah Gardner, and Natalie J. Ring. Robert Greene will serve as moderator. Join us on Friday, March 29 at 1pmET for an engaging discussion of this seminal work! Register for the event at https://bit.ly/shaclassic24.

SHA Coffee, Tea, and Confab

Our next Coffee, Tea, and Confab will be a meet-up of junior scholars. Undergrad and grad students, as well as early career historians, and all are welcome! This will be a great opportunity to network, ask questions, seek advice, and build community. Join us before the March Junior Scholars Workshop on Thursday, March 21 at 12pmET. Register at https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIpfumtrT8oHtVucWHd098-Zw4Fo9oSrXuw.
History Across Generations

This virtual program, schedule to take place each fall before the annual conference, brings together junior and senior scholars to talk about their shared areas of expertise. Two historians at different stages of their career converse over Zoom in the hopes of learning things new and old about our profession. Our goal is to bridge the scholarly generational divide, one that is too often reaffirmed and reinforced through institutional practices. There are always new approaches to old questions, old ways that deserve rediscovery, and paths forward that can be charted together.

Our first conversation took place in Fall 2023 between two exceptional scholars: Abena Boakyewa-Ansah, Associate Director of the George and Ann Richards Civil War Era and Assistant Research Professor at Pennsylvania State University, and Joseph P. Reidy, Professor Emeritus at Howard University and current SHA President. Watch at https://youtu.be/ZOEJ-vLbyOw?si=yKLUTM3KaGOQG-Ok.
